She
saw his fingers shake a little as she clutched at the edge of
the door as if it were trying to get away from her.
Glassy-eyed, he rasped.
“Nikita, I thought everything was fine.
I never knew what hit me.”
Fine lines of fatigue framed his eyes and mouth.
“And I’m still in shock.
She never even gave me a hint that there was someone
else. Did you know
him?”
Nikita stepped into the room,
her heart pumping like crazy.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she spoke as calmly as
she could. “She
was getting over him when the two of you met.”
“Yeah?
Well, it didn’t work, did it?”
He placed his tux on a chair.
“We had an understanding.
We weren’t desperately in love with one another, but
there were some pretty special feelings between us.”
It hurt to see him like this.
Nikita moved close and put her arms around him.
His body was stiff and rigid, as if he were holding his emotions in.
“Michael,” she said in a low, aching voice.
He
gasped, a faint tremor running through him.
“How could she do this to me?”
She
stroked the soft hair at the nape of his neck.
“It wasn’t planned.
It just happened, Michael.”
“Yeah.”
He ran a hand over his forehead.
“I wish I had a plan.
I'll probably spend the rest of the day on display as an
object of pity and ridicule.”
Nikita is heartsick as she watches her
best friend walk down the aisle toward the man she loves.
Through a shocking turn of events, Nikita finds herself on the
honeymoon cruise with the groom, but she's not his bride and
their friendship is Everything but Love. When Michael has an
accident on board the ship, she takes a chance to make all her
dreams come true.
